Veterinary Development and Education

When Steve and Pam Zicker moved to Ethiopia in July of 2006, they served as associates with Christian Veterinary Mission, a wonderful organization based in Seattle, WA.  Steve taught in the Mekelle University School of Veterinary Medicine and engaged in research projects in support of livestock health and development.  Since Ethiopia has the largest livestock population in the Africa and the 10th largest in the world, the impact of empowering veterinarians to better care for and improve the health of their animals is immeasurable.    Steve Zicker continues to be involved with Christian Veterinary Mission through networking and assistance with small projects.  Gifts may be sent to Christian Veterinary Mission and directed to their efforts in Ethiopia.  In addition, Fields of Promise hopes to find more ways to assist veterinarians with their practices and research through teaching trips, field projects, the provision of books and journals for the veterinary school library, and looking for ways to support small farms and dairy projects in their efforts.

Funds were provided through our fundraising with CVM to construct a dairy cow shed and three dairy cows at a nearby orphanage during our time in Ethiopia.  In the photo, the director is being introduced to one of the new cows.  These veterinary projects lead to better food and milk production for families and children.  They also enable the owners  to make a better living.

The cost of a barn this size for 30 cows, plus room for expansion above is about $30,000 US. Each cow, which can produce enough milk to provide 8 orphans per day with daily milk, costs about $1000 US.  It is our goal to identify sustainable projects that will make a significant impact on food security, sanitation, and animal welfare, and assist Ethiopians with implementation.  Please join us!

Please consider volunteering your time or contributing to these sustainable development projects, which will reap many benefits for Ethiopia in the future.  If interested, you may contact Christian Veterinary Mission to learn more about shuttle trips, or contact Fields of Promise at info@fieldsofpromise.org.  There are many opportunities to give and to serve!
