Operation Rescue has such a great track record in Mekelle, we have desired along with them to expand their influence in the Tigray Region. In October, we traveled north to Adigrat, a community about one hour from the Eritrean border. The town was greatly impacted by the war and has been hit hard by HIV. They have over 2,200 registered orphans in their community and no social service organizations who are able to assist them. ORE has been asked to set up a replica project in this area and Fields of Promise desires to partner with them by finding sponsors for the first 100 children. This will enable them to begin in 2010 to set up this project. ORE will work to find extended family caregivers for 100 of these orphans, monitor their home situations, keep them in school, and protect them from a life on the streets. This is our top priority for 2010!
We will start with 100 children, providing a compound where a daily meal, tutoring, computer training, and mentoring can take place. Sponsors are needed for the children at $35 per month. These funds will go to provide the framework for the project, rent for the compound, and hire full time staff to oversee the program. When orphans are identified with no extended family or neighbors willing to care for them, we will provide permanent care through one of our appropriate Houses of Promise.
The town is about an hour from Mekelle by car, but is very poor, with high rates of unemployment and due to its position on the truck routes, it has a high rate of HIV infection due to prostitution. Opportunities exist to provide wholistic ministry to children and their families, broadening our impact. We are excited to see how God will use this project to minister to more children in an area where services are really needed.
