HOUSE OF PROMISE #2 - PROTECTION FOR ADOLESCENT AND BLIND FEMALES

As God began to bring us blind students in need of sponsorship, our concern grew for the females who were as young as 14, but living on their own in small mud buildings with no locking doors and with no way to defend themselves against predators.  In February of 2008, we rented our second House of Promise to enable these girls to live in safety.  In July of 2009 we incorporated our older sighted females into this home and this became our Older Girls House of Promise.  Currently 13 girls ranging in age from 16-22 live together in this home helping one another in various ways.  A housemother lives with them during the day to help with cooking and cleaning and another at night who sleeps in and is available for any other needs.  Day and night guards keep the home protected so our young ladies can live and sleep in peace.

By early 2009 we had a well-stocked Blind Student Resource Room sharing the compound with these girls.  This room has 4 computers equipped with software making them blind-accessible and the Blind Student Caseworker provides trainings on a weekly basis to both male and female students out of this Resource Room.  In addition, the girls can access it after hours for computer work, school studies, and games.  Since the Guest House for Fields of Promise is also on this compound, the FOP staff and volunteers enjoy spending tiem with the young ladies on their visits.  These resilient girls radiate joy like no others!  They love their new home and are enjoying the fellowship of living together.

One goal of the home is that the mothers will mentor them and train them in independent living so that they will be prepared for keeping their own homes in the future when they have completed their education.  For now, they enjoy listening to music, helping each other study, and dreaming of their future with the help of their sponsorship.

ANNUAL OPERATING COSTS:  $7,000 US           This house is already sponsored by two families who have joined forces to make a difference in the lives of young women.  Click on  Ways to Give to find out how you can do the same, or to donate Braille books or assistive technology equipment to allow us to expand their resource room.
